Version 1.04

Version 1.04

<< Go back

This is the last release of Windows 1.0 from April/May 1987. Along with various bugfixes, the readme says it introduced support for IBM's new Personal System/2 (PS/2) line of computers, though it lacks both the VGA display and PS/2 mouse drivers. It also introduced the new Microsoft logo from 1987 on the bootscreen.

There are two distinct copies of this release. The earlier one is from 10th April 1987, while the later one is from 11th May 1987. The May release has an updated GDI.EXE and some printer drivers, Paint and Write versions 1.04 instead of 1.03, and a fixed typo in the readme. It is only assumed these are both retail releases, as this cannot be verified at this time without an original dump and photos/scans of the packaging and disks. There doesn't appear to be anything OEM-specific in either of these releases, though. Both come on seven 5.25" 360 kB floppy disks. Disks 1-5 are for the OS and applications, disk 6 is for Windows Write, while disk 7 is a supplementary printer driver disk.

At this time it is only available in English, though a German release on three 3.5" 720 kB floppies is confirmed to exist. Other languages are also possible.
