Version 1.03 for NEC PC-98

Version 1.03 for NEC PC-98

<< Go back

NEC PC-98 was a standard Japanese computer for two decades before it finally gave way to PC-compatibles. It has hardware support for Japanese characters. Pre-release versions of Windows already ran on these machines. It appears that versions 1.01, 1.02 and 1.03 were all released for the PC-98, most likely in Japanese. This means the first localization of Windows 1.0 was in fact a Japanese one.

PC-98 is not PC-compatible, but it ran special versions of MS-DOS and Windows. Several emulators exist for it, such as Anex86. This release comes in two forms, both of which are preinstalled copies unfortunately. Original media remains to be found.

One copy is on a Japanese format floppy disk, the other is on a hard disk image. Otherwise, the two copies are identical as far as Windows goes and are both dated 20th November 1986. It doesn't appear to have a bootscreen at all.
